Description

Virginia Commonwealth University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action university providing access to education and employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, political affiliation, veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or disability.

Position Summary:

The Spiegel lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, has openings for two postdoctoral scientists to study the functions of bioactive sphingolipid metabolites including sphingosine-1-phosphate in novel signaling pathways important for obesity, inflammation, cancer, and metabolic disorders. To study these, we utilize in vivo mouse genetics, confocal microscopy, viral-vector based cellular labeling and manipulation of genes, cell cultures and state-of-the-art biochemical and molecular approaches. We offer an intellectual, collaborative, and multidisciplinary research environment to support career goals and provide access to modern facilities. Candidates with background knowledge and hands-on experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, or other relevant fields. Skills in sphingolipid biology are particularly welcome.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Design and perform experiments
  • Analyze, interpret and discuss experimental data with PI
  • Write first drafts of manuscripts

Minimum Hiring Standards:
  • Strong research background in sphingolipids, cell biology, molecular biology, and/or mouse models
  • Evidence of successful completion of a research project (publications)
  • Ability to work independently
  • Interpret, present, and discuss experimental data
  • Excellent communications skills
  • This will be a minimum one-year appointment, contingent upon satisfactory annual reviews
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD or MD/PhD (or equivalent) in biological sciences
  • Experience in sphingolipid biology

This is a restricted position with no set end date and continued employment is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance.

The School of Medicine continuously strives for our workplace and learning environment to reflect the demographic and social milieu of the communities we serve. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

ORP Eligible: Yes
